An all-rounder when it comes to screenwriting

The script-doctor is a master of dramatic grammar. Ideally, he's not just a theorist; he's at ease in almost every genre he's ever worked in as a screenwriter: drama, comedy, thriller, romance, fantasy, action, etc., whether in live action or animation.

Key words: emotion, meaning, congruence

His approach to script development is both intuitive and cognitive, emotional and intellectual. This means that, on the one hand, he is able to assess the emotion generated by situations and characters; on the other, he can identify the thematic proposition (backbone) and dramatic proposition (narrative “flesh”) mobilized by the author, as well as the way in which he brings them together and articulates them into an organic whole. This harmony, the cardinal virtue of a good screenplay, is congruence.

A script mechanic

The script-doctor conducts an in-depth analysis of the script engine. With the help of the author, he identifies any internal dysfunctions, such as problems of thematic clarity (imprecise, confused, contradictory ideas) and apparent dysfunctions i.e. dramatic dysfunctions (characterization, structure, dialogue, etc.). Every element of the screenplay machine is evaluated, from the basic idea to the dialogue. He identifies the tone of the script, its originality, the relevance and fluidity of the dramatic progression. He diagnoses the script's strengths and weaknesses. At the author's request, he proposes a range of tools, solutions and avenues to remedy the dysfunctions identified.
